Imaging clinical trials are complex, especially with the multi-center multi-modal nature that comes with their execution. Medical imaging, especially MRI is a relatively novel technology and historically imaging has been used for safety and inclusion/exclusion criteria and mainly for human readers in oncology.

Clinical trials increasingly depend on the quantification and interpretation of medical imaging to establish efficacy. However, the execution of imaging clinical trials is a complex. 85% of all clinical trials will experience delays, and the financial impact of these delays can be massive, costing between $600,000 - $8 million every day, most of the trials also experience a high patient dropout rate, between the 15 to 40% depending on the trial.

 

On top of everything, the results are impacted by variability introduced by equipment (different scanner vendors), protocol implementations, imaging artifacts and human error.
